Sea Urchins, Minimum age 5

This is the entry level for most swimmers on the Stingrays, especially for those less than 9 years of age. It is the first step for swimmers to be introduced to competitive swimming. The primary goal of this group is to focus on freestyle and backstroke and familiarize a young swimmer to the group environment and to the basic concept of “team”.

Prerequisites to join this group: Swimmers must be able to swim 1 length each of freestyle and backstroke.

Manta, Ages 5 to 8

This level is for the 8 and under age group. They will swim between 800 and 1200 yards during practice. Practice will follow a systematic approach to competitive swimming, using drill and stroke progressions. Starts, streamlines, turns and stroke mechanics are the focus of this group. Major emphasis will be placed on freestyle and backstroke, with an introduction to butterfly and breaststroke.

Prerequisites to join this group: • Swimmers must swim 50 yards freestyle, 50 yards backstroke, and be ready to learn a third stroke.

Barracuda, Ages 8 to 11

This group will swim from 1200 to 2000 yards each practice. Similar to the Manta group, this group is physically and mentally mature enough to do more yardage and conditioning. Swimmers move into this group to increase their level of conditioning and are also introduced to advanced racing techniques, pace clock use, and basic goal setting. There is a balance between stroke mechanics and conditioning at this level.

Prerequisites to join this group: Must be able to swim 50 yards of 3 of the strokes with proper starts and turns and be ready to learn the fourth stroke.

Junior Red, Ages 10 to 13

The junior group swims from 2000 to 3000 yards per day. This age group program is for swimmers who are serious about training and competition. Conditioning is a major priority for the group. Swimmers must be proficient and competent in turns, starts, and the four competitive strokes. Reinforcement of proper technique will run in conjunction with training. A commitment of 4 to 5 practices a week is expected.

Prerequisites to join this group: Swimmers must be able to swim 100 yards of free, breast, and back with proper starts and turns, as well as 50 yards of fly.

Junior Black, Ages 12 and over

This group will swim between 3000 and 5000 yards per day. This group is for the serious age group swimmer who is not in high school yet. The priorities of this group are to improve and emphasize technique, race strategy, proper practice habits, nutrition, teamwork, conditioning, and goal setting. This group is primarily for swimmers who are reaching state qualifying times within their age groups Prerequisites to join this group: Swimmers must be able to swim 8x100 freestyle at 1:45; 8x50 stroke at 1:00; be able to complete 2x200 IM under 7:00.
