Gymnastics Lessons

The YMCA Bellefonte branch offers an array of gymnastics classes for both recreational and competitive gymnasts.  Our highly trained staff utilizes a curriculum that is designed to advance each child’s gross motor skills, balance, and coordination in a fun, enjoyable environment while enhancing self-esteem, physical, and mental abilities of your child.  Children who show advanced capabilities beyond recreational classes will be invited to join our competitive program.  Team is invitation only, but if you are interested in joining our competitive program, would like your child evaluated, or would like more information contact Kerry Lewis at [email protected].

 


Gym Tots

This introductory class is for children ages 3 – 5 ready to begin a structured class.  It is designed to provide development of motor skills, balance, coordination, motor, and behavior skills utilizing playful gymnastics activities.  Your child will stimulate motor skills such as skipping, hopping, jumping, swinging and hanging, along with social awareness skills including sharing, taking turns, following directions, and child-to-child interaction.  
Class will focus on basic gymnastics and strength development activities such as climbing, jumping, balance, hand/arm support utilizing all four Olympic events. 

Class Age:  3 – 5

NEW THIS SUMMER!!

BEGINNER TUMBLING      

This is our entry level tumbling class for children with little or no tumbling experience.  Focus is on basic fundamental gymnastics floor skills, form and technique, in addition to strength and flexibility to enhance skill progression and safety.
Some skills your child will learn include:
Cartwheels
Round offs
Handstands
Bridge kick overs
Beginner instruction for back handsprings.
Class Age: 7 and up
Class Time:  Fridays 3:30 – 4:30
Class Length:  60 minutes

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED TUMBLING


This tumbling class for children who have accomplished beginner tumbling or have previous tumbling experience and proficiency.  Focus is on more advanced floor skills in addition to increasing strength and flexibility to enhance gymnastics safety and skill achievement.  Children will continue to refine skills gained in beginner tumbling, while learning more advanced standing and running tumbling skills and skill connections.

Front and Back Walkovers
Front and Back Handsprings
Round off Back Handsprings
Front and Back Saltos
Skill Connections
Requirements for entry to this class include:  Completion of Beginner Tumble class and/or must have full cartwheel, round off, handstand, and bridge kick over.
Class Age:  7 and up
Class Time:  Saturdays 11:00 – 12:00
Class Length:  60 minutes

Pre-School Gymnastics

This structured 1 hour class introduces the 4 – 6 year old pre-school child to gymnastics.  Focus is based on building strength, flexibility, and coordination while providing the basic fundamentals of gymnastics on each of the 4 events.  Your child will stimulate motor skills such as skipping, hopping, jumping, running, and hanging, along with social awareness skills including sharing, taking turns, following directions, and child-to-child interaction. 
Class structure is similar to Gym Tots but will more intensely focus on introductory gymnastics skill development while utilizing more challenging elements.

Class Age:  4 – 6
Class Length:  60 minutes

Level 1 – Beginner Gymnastics

 This is our introductory gymnastics class for ages 6 and up.  Focus is on basic fundamental and foundational gymnastics skills in addition to strength, flexibility, balance, and body awareness on Vault, Bars, Beam, and Floor Exercise.  Children will begin to develop USAG level 1 skills such as rolls, cartwheels, handstands, front supports, casts, and confidence on high balance beam.
Class structure includes a warm-up stretch period and time spent on 2-3 events per class.

Class Length:  60 minutes

Level 2 Intermediate

This intermediate level class for students 6 and up further builds on introductory skills, strength, and flexibility on all gymnastics events previously learned.  Previous gymnastics experience or coach approval is required to join.  This class provides more challenging skills while continuing to promote self-esteem and body awareness.  Focus is based on USAG compulsory level 2 skills including bridge kickovers, backward rolls, round offs, back hip circles, and introductory acrobatic beam skills.
Class structure includes a warm-up stretch period and time spent on 2-3 events per class. 

Class Age:  6 and up
Class Length:  60 minutes

Level 3 Advanced

Our most advanced class provides the more experienced gymnast with a multitude of challenges to enhance their gymnastics skills.  The gymnast will continue to build on skills already accomplished in the previous level.  Focus is on USAG compulsory skills in level 3 and up.  Skills will be more advanced including back handsprings on floor, handstand on beam, and front handspring vaults.  Previous gymnastics experience or coach approval required.  
Class structure includes a warm-up stretch period and time spent on 3 events per class in addition to strength and flexibility training for the last 15 minutes of class.

Class Length:  90 minutes
