Student Youth Theatre (SYT) Program
The Moshannon Valley YMCA Student Youth Theatre is committed to providing excellent, accessible theatrical training for youth, with professional-quality performances for the Central PA region. This program seeks to develop and encourage every child’s talent, confidence, and potential through singing, acting, dance, and other art forms. The program strives to encourage public appreciation of the performing arts and to develop future audiences and supporters of the Performing Arts.
The SYT program has been very successful and has created an avenue to bring students together from many area school districts and created a common goal of theatre. SYT does major production each summer. Past productions include: Peter Pan, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, A Broadway Review, and Fiddler on the Roof.
Drew Baker, SYT Coordinator/Artistic Director has been in charge of the program for over two years and brings experience and talent to his position. Volunteers are crucial to the success of the SYT program, filling positions in costuming, marketing, concession, fundraising, set design/construction and much more. SYT has a musical coordinator, pit band and pit band director for their productions.
The wait is over! SYT 2017 is an exciting and fun show, stepping out of the box and doing a show not typically considered for summer. Following the lead of many successful theatres and summer programs elsewhere, we will be celebrating CHRISTMAS IN JULY with our 2017 show. Come July, we will all be wishing for a lil snow! The wish will come true as we transform WEST BRANCH HIGH SCHOOL into a snowy North Pole and the streets of NYC—that’s right….
SYT 2017 will be full of excitement and exhilaration as we prepare a title known the world over—- Elf The Musical JR—. is a thrilling holiday musical that can easily bring joy to an audience any time of the year. Based on the cherished New Line Cinema hit, Elf JR. features songs by Tony Award-nominees, Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, with a book by Tony Award-winners, Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin.
Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.
This modern-day holiday classic is sure to make every young performer embrace his or her “inner elf” with plenty of large ensemble numbers featuring elves and (New Yorkers) of every type.
Auditions will be held April 17th & 18th at the Moshannon Valley YMCA. Audition packets will be available April 1 at the YMCA.
