AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARDING COURSE

May 25 - June 3 (see details below)

If you’ve ever thought about getting certified as a lifeguard, now is your chance! This course will certify successful participants in First Aid, CPR/AED and Lifeguarding. You must be 15 years of age or older before June 1, 2012 to enroll in the course.   Participants must attend ALL six sessions, and pass all required swimming, demonstration and written tests. The cost of the class is $180 YMCA of Centre County members, $250 for non-members. To register, visit any YMCA branch or register online now.

Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies, this program combines discussions, video and hands-on training. Real-life rescue scenarios reinforce decision-making skills. Free quarterly refreshers. Course covers how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Topics include:

  • Primary assessment
  • Ventilations (incl. use of CPR breathing barriers and use of BVMs)
  • Choking (incl. conscious and unconscious)
  • CPR (incl. one- and two-rescuer)
  • AED

Participants learn to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies, such as burns, cuts and scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck and back injuries, and heat and cold emergencies.
