For Healthy Living

Being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a place where you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together through our many family-centered activities. At the Y, it’s not about the activity you choose as much as it is about the benefits of living healthier on the inside as well as the outside.

One Member's Story

“As a recent graduate and entrepreneur, money was quite tight last year and I received a YMCA membership through the Open Doors program. I decided to take up swimming because I’d heard it was the best total body workout and I didn’t want to run in the winter J. I took swim lessons as a child but had mostly putzed around at pools since. After witnessing me flailing around the pool with something resembling a freestyle stroke, the YMCA head swim coach Steve Power offered to add me to the list of community members he coached on a weekly basis, non-gratis. I decided that if someone was going to give me their time and expertise, I would become serious about swimming. I invested in getting properly suited up, capped off and penned swimming into my weekly schedule. Over the next few weeks Steve helped me repair my freestyle and add a few more strokes to my repertoire. Not only did I quickly become a functional swimmer, but I discovered one of my favorite activities. I LOVE SWIMMING!

The pay-off was huge when I made swimming a regular morning activity. I got a good workout, a much-needed mental break, had more energy during the day and the ability to think clearly, focus and prioritize better. My perspective on life was significantly improved. I came home from the pool relaxed and happy and was consequently able to accomplish more each day.

Many thanks to the YMCA of Centre County and Steve Power for enabling me to discover and develop a hugely beneficial and enjoyable life skill!”

Sincerely,

Emily
