Our State College Branch is currently accepting applications for a full-time Child Care Director to be responsible for the supervision and direction of School Age Child Care Programs, Child Watch services, family events, and youth enrichment programs at the State College YMCA.
Primary Responsibilities
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and following of PA Department of Human Services (DHS) regulations and YMCA of Centre County policies.
- Ensure all part-time child care staff have been properly trained to understand YMCA of Centre County policies, DHS regulations, PA Keystone STARS standards, and Environmental Rating Scale.
- Ensure the supervision of all children – defined by DHS as: to be physically present with a group of children - in which the staff can see, hear, direct, and access the children in their care.
- Gear all programs to the individual children with concern for their interests, special talents, individual style, and pace of learning. Create and implement a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and meets the individual needs of each child.
- Communicate with parents, children, and co-workers in an appropriate manner and ensure child assessments/portfolios are complete and parent/teacher conferences are held at appropriate times of the year.
- Manage the Child Watch program, including communicating with parents and staff and overseeing all aspects of the space used for the program, including but not limited to, safety, cleanliness, and occupancy/ratios of staff to children.
- Hire new staff as needed. Schedule, manage, and mentor existing Child Care, Child Watch, and Youth Program Staff. Evaluate employees on an annual basis, and complete payroll (approving timecards) for Child Care, Child Watch, and Youth Program Staff.
- Recruit volunteers for and lead the department in the Annual Giving Campaign.
- Develop, manage, and monitor the Child Care, Child Watch, and Youth Enrichment Program budgets and meet or exceed budget goals.
- Complete all administrative paperwork in a timely and organized manner.
- Complete 25 hours of direct service weekly, in which the employee is counted in ratio and replaces another paid staff.
- Perform additional duties at the request of the Branch Executive Director or other management staff.
Qualifications (should meet ONE of these criteria)
- Bachelor’s Degree in education or a human services field.
- Associate degree in education or a human services field plus 1 year of experience working with children - totaling a minimum of 1250 hours.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a non-human services field, 30 credits in education or human services, plus 2 years of experience working with children - totaling a minimum of 2500 hours.
- Associate degree in a non-human service field, 30 credits in education or human services, plus 3 years of experience working with children - totaling a minimum of 3750 hours.

The State College YMCA is currently accepting applications for part-time Assistant Swim Team Coaches to be responsible for upholding safety rules, Y policies, and creating a positive and inclusive learning environment for swim team participants.
Primary Responsibilities
- Interact positively with members, participants, and parents. Redirect parent or participant questions or concerns to the head coach. Provide constructive feedback to swimmers.
- Arrive on time for practice, with arranged plans to provide appropriate instruction for the swim level assigned.
- Maintain an awareness of changing trends within competitive swimming and implement techniques and changes as necessary.
- Attend swim meets as assigned by the head coach.
- Be aware of and assist lifeguards in addressing safety concerns with swimmers in and out of the pool.
Qualifications
- At a minimum, some high school level education is required.
- Some competitive swimming experience is required.

The State College YMCA is currently accepting applications for a full-time Lifeguard Supervisor to be responsible for upholding safety rules, YMCA policies, accident prevention, and emergency response at our indoor pools, including supervising patrons and other lifeguards.
Primary Responsibilities
- Supervise lifeguard staff during shift times, including opening and closing procedures.
- Test the pool daily to ensure a safe swimming environment; add chemicals to maintain proper chemistry if full-time. Advise the Aquatic Director of issues with both short-term and long-term pool maintenance.
- Maintain an orderly and clean work environment in pump/chemical areas.
- Maintain orderly log books in accordance with PA Health Codes. Abide by the PA State Bather’s Code for clean-up and removal of incidents of water contamination.
- Remain physically and mentally alert, taking a proactive approach to searching for distressed swimmers and hazards.
- Successfully communicate with youth and adults to enforce pool rules and schedules.
- Remain calm, respond effectively, and give clear directions in an emergency situation.
- Maintain safety of pool environment by removing hazards that could lead to injury in or around the pool deck and halting any dangerous behavior displayed by patrons.
- Clean the pool facility, vacuum the pool, and all other duties assigned to ensure pool cleanliness standards through active participation and supervising staff.
- Remain physically capable of completing the prerequisite swim test as specified by the American Red Cross to ensure ability to respond in an emergency situation.
Qualifications
- At a minimum, some high school level education is required.
- Current lifeguard certification or ability to obtain a certification.
- Full-time head lifeguards should have or attain a Pesticide Technician status or higher within 90 days of employment.
Salary/Benefits
- $12.00 - $14.00 per hour depending on the nature of shifts worked (2 guard shifts, AM shifts, etc.)

- Current lifeguard certification or ability to obtain a certification.
Salary/Benefits
- $9.50 - $11.50 per hour depending on the nature of shifts worked (2 guard shifts, AM shifts, head guard responsibilities, etc.)
- $16.00 - $25.00 per hour if serving as a swim lesson instructor – for those interested and qualified.

The State College YMCA is currently accepting applications for part-time Swim Instructors to be responsible for teaching swim lessons utilizing the Y USA Swim Lesson Program and YMCA of Centre County approved lesson plans.
Primary Responsibilities
- Create a warm and positive environment while encouraging swimmers to meet course objective. Maintain a positive rapport with parents and other patrons.
- Follow lesson plans and create drills and activities within swim lesson program guidelines.
- Support, follow, and enforce all facility rules and regulations with extra emphasis on safety. Teach age-appropriate rules in a positive manner to lesson participants. Report problems or concerns to the Program Director.
- Take attendance using the class roster. Those not on the roster must register at the front desk.
- Private Swim Instructors should verify payment for private lessons by viewing a receipt from the client prior to teaching the lesson. Once the lesson is complete, instructors should log it and keep track of those paid at the front desk. Under no circumstances should an instructor directly accept money from a client for the services given.
- Complete skills sheets after each class and store in YMCA binder.
- Communicate with parents about their child’s progress.
- Assist with keeping the pool area clean and complete other duties within the pool area as assigned.
Qualifications
- At least 16 years of age.
- Prior experience teaching swim lessons preferred.
- Prior swimming experience necessary.

- $16.00 - $25.00 per hour.
