little boy eating appleThe YMCA of Centre County is committed to helping end childhood hunger. The Backpack Weekend Food Program provides a bag of food for students to eat on weekends when they are not receiving a school lunch. The need and demand for this program has increased throughout our service area, and we are now serving Philipsburg-Osceola, Bellefonte, Bald Eagle, Moshannon Valley, West Branch, and Penns Valley Area Schools.

“It really helps my family, because we don’t have food in our house.”

For information about how your child can participate in the Backpack Weekend Food Program, contact your school or YMCA branch.
Backpacks are prepared each week at the Philipsburg-Osceola Middle School and Wingate Elementary School by volunteers, some of whom then deliver the backpacks to the 18 schools the following day.

“As I was walking into the school, a parent came up to me and gave me a big hug with tears in her eyes, and thanked me for the program and told how much it means for her children. She said it was such a relief to not have to worry about having enough food for them on the weekend, with the family struggling financially. I feel even more committed after seeing first hand what a difference the Backpack Program has made.”
