See What Participants Have to Say:
“I enjoy Stretch and Flex for many reasons. First, Dona is very supportive and encouraging so that participants will try a little harder each class to progress with their fitness. Second, the social atmosphere of the class is incredible. It really is a family-like atmosphere and the class is even involved in extra-curricular activities together. I have made many new friends from taking this class and it is a very welcoming environment to newcomers.” -Louise, Class Participant
“I started taking the class about 3 years ago because of injuries to my back and leg. The class was a great addition to my therapy. It is a wonderful atmosphere for older adults. I love the class and Dona as an instructor.” -Judy, Class Participant
Meet the Instructor:
Dona Goldman has been a member of the Bellefonte YMCA since 1988. After retiring from the Bellefonte Middle School after 28 years of teaching social studies courses, she became an instructor of active older adult classes at the Y. Jen Carroll, a fellow instructor, encouraged her to teach an aerobics class three days a week. Jen was an outstanding instructor and mentor who was willing to assist Dona by making aerobic tapes for the class. The three day a week classes eventually turned into five days a week. Unfortunately, five years ago, Dona was diagnosed with cancer. After a three month hiatus, she was back at the Y teaching two mornings a week. Dona has many loyal followers who attend her growing Stretch and Flex class.
But Donna didn’t just stop at just teaching a class. She was also instrumental in getting a book club started about ten years ago. That same book club meets once a month in the conference room at the Y and currently has fourteen members. In addition to book club, two other clubs, Mahjong and Adult Coloring were also organized by Dona. To this day, each of these groups meet weekly in the Y conference room.
Volunteering has always been an important part of Don’s life. She previously served on the Y board, was President of Historic Bellefonte Inc., Secretary of Bellefonte Kiwanis Club, and active at the Bellefonte Art Museum. But the Y has always remained her passion. She considers the people here her family and is thankful she has made so many friends throughout the years that have given her a great deal of support and love.
