Senior Strength

Senior Strength is a functional fitness class for the active older adult and those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. The class incorporates functional movements for increased quality of movement in everyday life. Also, cardio work will increase endurance and help to build a happier, healthier you.

Meet the Instructor:

Leslie began working at the YMCA in January of 2016, but has been an active member and program participant for over two years. She began working with a Health Coach in the semi-private program and taking the Senior Strength class in September 2014 when she was cleared to drive after almost 2 years.

In October 2012, Leslie sustained a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. The injury affected her ability to process sensory information related to visual perception and motion.  She spent the next 21 months working with a team of doctors and therapists to control migraines and vertigo, learn how to control visual information, and ultimately regain independence in walking and driving.  By the end of the therapy program, she continued to battle episodes of nausea and vertigo, gained over 35 pounds, and her self-confidence was at an all-time low.  At the recommendation of a friend, Leslie contacted the Wellness Director at the Bellefonte YMCA.  It was the start of an amazing relationship and life-changing journey!

Over the past 2 years, Leslie has continued to work with a Health Coach, lost the extra weight, gained strength and confidence, and began working again. In January of this year, she started her fitness instructor career teaching the same Senior Strength class that she participated in back in September 2014.  Leslie has been active in fundraising and takes pride in promoting the mission of the YMCA.  Much of the time she can be found teaching class in the main building on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, working at the Annex desk, working out in the fitness center, or chatting with friends she’s made along the way.

Most recently, Leslie accepted a position with the Wellness Department as the Assistant Wellness Coordinator. Leslie shared that her ultimate goal is to be able help others the way the YMCA staff and members have helped and supported her!
